New Orleans: Why Should We Still Care?         Email a friend

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of the United States. Many people are still suffering from the devastation. The original author of this study, Bill Quigley, was left behind in the hurricane, helping his wife who works at a hospital in New Orleans. He considers who all was left behind during the hurricane and reflects on how we need to all be concerned about how the powerless are taken care of in our country. Jean Marie Peacock pastored a church in New Orleans and lost both her home and her church in the storm. She now leads church-related assistance projects and has updated this study each year, reporting on life today in New Orleans and suggesting what participants can do to help.

Why should we still care? If nothing else, we should care because the situation shows how vulnerable many Americans are, whether they face an actual hurricane or are living in similar conditions in other parts of our country.

If you have previously purchased this study and wish to download the new, updated version without cost, you may re-download it from your download library on the MY ACCOUNT page. If you are a subscriber and have previously downloaded the study you may simply re-download the new version.

One final note. This study was updated August, 2008 just prior to Hurricane Gustav which passed through New Orleans in September. It does not cover the damage or the reaction caused by Gustav.
