Most Old Testament authors did not share modern Christians' pressing desire to know what will happen to us and to our loved ones when we die. The Old Testament authors' major focus, rather, was on living this earthly life within the blessings of God, whom they affirmed as the Creator and sustainer of all that is. In the New Testament, Jesus and other authors spoke often of a coming resurrection and judgment, but said little about any interim existence. Yet there are a few key passages suggesting that we go to be with Christ at the moment of death.

In this three-session study we consider both Old and New Testament views on death and afterlife--their similarities and their differences--and we define what constitutes a contemporary Presbyterian perspective of the meaning of life after death.

Susan R. Garrett is Professor of New Testament at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. She has previously taught at Emory and Yale Universities.
