The first Spider-Man film dealt at length with the themes of responsibility, important both to Christ (see Luke 12:48) and to Peter Parker's Uncle Ben. It was the latter who implanted in his beloved nephew's mind and soul the saying that is repeated in all three films: "With great gifts go great responsibility." The second Spider-Man film stressed the cross that always accompanies a great gift and responsibility. In Peter's case his personal life suffered greatly because of his being on constant call to dash forth and rescue people. His relationship with his girlfriend Mary Jane Watson was so threatened that at one point Peter gave up his cross (Spider-Man's mission) so that he could lead a normal life. However, the needs of the city were so great that he could not abandon his call, and with Mary Jane discovering his identity and agreeing to share in his burden, Peter/Spider-Man again takes up his mission to defend the powerless and battle the oppressor.

In the third Spider-Man film our hero faces powerful enemies, one of which is inside him. The film offers the explanation that sin or evil comes from the outside, something the group will want to explore more deeply. Like the earlier films, this one is strong in showing human emotions and the price paid in relationships by the choices we make and the values we cherish. But most striking this time is the insight that even heroes defending "truth, justice, and the American way" are susceptible to such forces as pride and the thirst for vengeance that are so threatening to the welfare of the human soul.

Three scenes from the film are presented, and discussion questions given for participants. Relevant Scriptures are also given and discussed.
