Although 72 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water, only 3 percent of that water is fresh water. Without fresh water most life as we know it would be impossible. In this study, we'll explore the issue of water pollution and consider ways in which we as Christians should share the responsibility of protecting our shared natural resources.
Water has crucial significance in the biblical narrative. It plays a role in creation, it is understood as essential to life, and it even figures in some miracle stories. It has momentous significance in the sacrament of baptism. A spiritual life without the symbolism of water would be as barren as a physical world without the presence of water. Even though the Bible does envision some kind of eventual end to history as we know it, there is little, if any, biblical warrant for human beings to take upon themselves to hasten that end by the irresponsible use of the environment.
In this study, participants will learn how water is misused, read Scripture passages that shed light on the spiritual importance of water, and discover ways large and small to turn the tide on the problem of water pollution.
