Purity codes have been observed in many religious traditions throughout history. Such codes encompass rules about food, bathing, and relationships. As rules, they are often restrictive and out of date with contemporary culture. In addition, they emphasize individual actions instead of broader moral teachings.
Recently there has been an increase in the promotion of sexual purity codes for teens by some Christian groups. Purity is most often associated with a virginity pledge--abstinence-only until marriage.
This one-session study clarifies just what purity codes were and how Jesus transformed the focus of the codes from strict observance to the intent behind them. Youth will be encouraged to discuss what healthy relationships are and to commit to taking concrete steps to improve all their relationships in life.
