A study on a movie about . . . vampires? That's right! As Christians we are called to be in a world filled to the brim with cultural phenomena and if Twilight does not count as a phenomena, nothing will.
Based on the first book in a four book series by Stephanie Meyer, Twilight delves into the lives of two teenagers whose forbidden love faces the threat of death, eternal life, choosing the "right" way to live, and a myriad of warnings from others.
Teenage girls in particular have flocked to the theaters to watch the movie. This study is written before the movie is out on DVD and assumes most participants have seen the movie. The film is reviewed and three scenes are described with reflection questions for discussion in group. One of the issues raised in the discussion is whether or not the film's depiction of the main character Bella's willingness to sacrifice herself for love is a healthy one. Participants will be able to discuss unconditional, self-sacrificing love and when it is or is not healthy.
