Christian ministries often struggle to account for urbanization’s growing force, complexities, and reach—and to formulate theologically and sociologically appropriate responses. Urban Ministry Reconsidered features a collection of original essays by leading scholars and practitioners that explores current issues and challenges in urban communities.

Together, these articles consider how cultural and structural frameworks have led to new conceptualizations and configurations of urban ministry. In addition, they examine the degree to which the social, spiritual, and organizational priorities of urban ministries have been reconceived in response to these shifts.

The Rev. Dr. R. Drew Smith is Professor of Urban Ministry and as chair of the Metro-Urban Institute Council at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Dr. Stephanie Boddie is the 2015-2016 postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University's Center for African American Urban Studies & Economy. She is also a faculty associate at Washington University's Center for Social Development and adjunct professor at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

The Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Peters served as the Henry L. Hillman Associate Professor of Urban Ministry and the first Director of the Metro-Urban Institute while at Pittsburgh Seminary for 18 years. In 2010 Dr. Peters was elected president of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia where he served several years. He currently serves as Interim Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh.

This is an important book that advances a number of new insights into urban ministry on a global scale. The attention to research that is found throughout its pages makes its arguments especially compelling. The section on public policy is much needed for urban practitioners.  The book is a welcomed addition to the field. – Dale T. Irvin, President and Professor of World Christianity, New York Theological Seminary

This will be the go to book for urban ministry because of its inclusive global perspective and the way it re-shapes the conversation to illustrate the nuances of what we mean by urban.  The various authors are honest regarding ministry challenges, while offering constructive ideas for transforming engagement.  A superb resource!
