Galatians: New creation and three crosses

St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians is like a cradle for the doctrine of “Justification by Faith.”  As the Gospel crossed the boundary of the Jews over to the Gentiles, there came about a theological confusion regarding the meaning of their conversion.  Some Jewish Christians supposed the conversion of the Gentiles to be the expansion of the Israelites as God’s chosen people, with the result that they were eager to persuade Gentile Christians to be incorporated fully into the Israelites by performing circumcision and observing the Law.  Such an imposition, for St. Paul, was not unlike the nullification of the redemptive works of grace made through the Christ’s death and resurrection.  Paul adamantly fought against such a dangerous setback of the Gospel by highlighting the significance of “faith” in appropriating God’s grace in Christ.  This book will follow through Paul’s logical arguments for the Gospel apart from the Law and its significance for newly born Christians.

갈라디아서: 새 창조와 세 개의 십자가

갈라디아서는 ‘믿음으로 의롭게 된다’는 뜻의 기독교의 중요 교리인 ‘이신칭의’(以信稱義, justification by faith)가 형성된 산실(産室)이다. ‘예수 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고 다시 사심으로써 우리가 믿음으로 그리스도 안에서 심판을 받지 않고 구원을 받게 된다’는 복음이 갈라디아 상황을 거치면서 ‘율법의 행위가 아니라 오직 믿음으로 의롭게 된다’는 기독교의 주요 가르침을 낳았다는 뜻이다. 우리의 삶과 구원의 핵심 개념이 ‘믿음’이다. ‘믿음’을 바로 이해하려면 갈라디아서를 깊이 천착해야 된다. 그냥 표면적으로 읽어서는 안 된다. 그 안에 흐르는 역사와 사건을 들여다 봐야 할 것이다. 그 역사의 현장을 그리고 있는 갈라디아서를 함께 공부하면 우리 신앙의 줄기가 바로 잡힐 것이다.
