Who doesn't want to live in a world of enchantment? To give up gritty, everyday reality for a fairytale life of "happily ever after"? But perhaps the name of this movie, Enchanted, is a misnomer for the plot line of this story. It would be very easy to see this movie as simply a story of finding one's "true love," the one who completes one's "life duet." But really the enchantment of this story unfolds as character after character experiences transformation from his or her past. As the transformation unfolds, characters discover new ways of becoming enchanted with the world around them. Perhaps enchantment in this film is not about becoming bewitched but instead about learning to take delight in the day and in paying attention to God's tug on the heart.
This movie lends itself to a meaningful discussion, particularly among senior high girls, of soul mates but also of being true to one's own soul. Three scenes are summarized, and questions for discussion are provided. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on moments in their lives when fantasy transformed into reality and the growth that came from that.
