H1N1 influenza, commonly referred to as "swine flu," is now considered a pandemic by the World Health Organization. According to the Centers for Disease Control, it was first identified in the United States in April of 2009. By August more than 40,000 "probable and suspect" cases had been reported in the country and more than one million cases were suspected in the general population--all this before the official start of the flu season on October 4.
How does this disease affect churchgoers and what is a Christian response to this illness? Christians are by their very nature congregants: we draw together from all corners and all walks of life, which can make us susceptible to any illness that spreads easily from person to person. In this study we'll look at the development of this not-so-new strain of influenza and discuss common symptoms, consider various risk factors for contracting the virus, and, most important, discuss ways to prevent its spread within our homes, our congregations, and our larger communities.
Full of sound information and helpful advice, this study serves to remind us of our ethical obligation not only to help protect ourselves from this virus, but also to help protect and care for others.
