Dan in Real Life is a well-made movie for teens to discuss because it portrays realistic, multi-generational, and messy family relationships between parents and children. We see the transformation of one man's life through his learning from these relationships, and we see the possibility of new life through the love of family. For teens who may have conflict with their parents or are realizing their parents are far from perfect, the film provides much for discussion.
Dan is a widower with three girls who unknowingly falls for a woman dating his younger brother. As he attempts to manage this love affair he also has his hands busy with his daughters. By reentering "real life," Dan's partially lived life becomes messier, unpredictable, topsy-turvy, and risk-filled in addition to becoming a life that is joyful, poignant, and blossoming with the newness of excitement and limitless possibilities that potential love brings.
Three clips from the film are provided with discussion questions for your youth group to discuss their relationships with their parents, how they deal with conflict, and what Christian family values may mean today.
