Durante el tiempo de prosperidad antes del exilio (587 a.e.c.), se levant un moralismo rgido en Israel. El grupo moralista aplic el libro de Proverbios a la situacin humana y aleg que enseaba a cmo tener una nueva vida. Pareca que este grupo tena todas las respuestas. Los amigos de Job repiten las respuestas trilladas sobre el sufrimiento y el rden moral del universo, pero Job les demuestra que estas respuestas no son suficientes para toda situacin. Las personas inocentes realmente sufren sin tener la culpa de su sufrimiento.
Las conexiones entre el bien y el mal y entre la recompensa y el castigo no son siempre automticas, mecnicas u obvias. Hay sufrimiento en donde la culpa directa no puede ser asignada a la persona creyente. Job impulsa a la comunidad de fe para que considere que la vida puede ser arbitraria. Frente a esta arbitrariedad de la vida, la relacin con Dios se vuelve menos una cuestin de conviccin doctrinal rgida, y ms de un encuentro personal. Job muestra que es en el encuentro abierto y honesto con Dios que el verdadero significado de la vida se encuentra.
Este estudio de una sola leccin se puede hacer fcilmente en dos lecciones. El grupo tratar de repetir los argumentos de cada uno de los tres amigos de Job que tratan de encontrar la razn de su sufrimiento. Tambin reflexionar sobre cmo Dios se encuentra en el sufrimiento y cmo podemos responder a las personas que sufren en medio nuestro.

During the time of prosperity prior to the exile (587 BCE), a rigid moralism arose in Israel. The moralists applied the book of Proverbs to the human situation and claimed to teach how to have the good life. It seemed as if they had all the answers. The friends of Job repeat the pat answers about suffering and the moral order of the universe, but Job demonstrates that these answers are not sufficient for every situation. Innocent people really do suffer from no fault of their own.
The connections between good and evil and between reward and punishment are not always automatic, mechanical, and obvious. There is suffering where direct blame cannot be assigned to the believer. Job pushes the community of faith to consider that life can be arbitrary. In the face of this arbitrariness of life, the relationship with God becomes less a matter of rigid, doctrinal conviction and more of a personal encounter. Job shows that it is in the open, honest encounter with God that the true meaning of life is to be found.
This one-session study can easily be made into two sessions. Participants will seek to repeat the arguments of each of Job's three friends who try to find reason for his suffering. They will also wrestle with where God is to be found in suffering and how we might respond to those suffering in our midst.
