In this one-session study for youth we'll explore manners and civility as they relate to Jesus' Golden Rule found in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew.
It may seem like a stretch to think that having to keep your elbows off the table when eating, or using the proper fork in a restaurant is a bit irrelevant to Christian faith, this study will help you make the connection. Most teens eventually question the manners they have been taught, either by parents or teachers. It's in their nature as they mature and grow more independent. When they were children they were pretty much forced into saying the magic words of "please" and "thank you" just to get what they wanted.
Then come the adolescent years when youth naturally begin to question much of what they've been told. They may even feel oppressed by the many rules and regulations regarding manners, so it's common to see them challenging or refusing to repeat social conventions they seemed to accept when they were younger. While this may drive adults a bit crazy, it also offers the perfect opportunity for us to help teens clarify their own beliefs about manners.
