How should you handle receiving a text at the dinner table or receiving a call while waiting in line at a store? Is it "okay" to breakup with a girlfriend or boyfriend via e-mail? Via text? Via Facebook? What are the rules for using technology? Are there any?
While it seems that, for most youth, using technology is like breathing, we must remember that much of this technology has only been around a short while compared to the whole of human history. Rules of etiquette for engaging in social situations have been around and evolved for centuries. However, many of these rules may not apply to social situations involving technology. We all know it's impolite to interrupt someone while they are talking, but is it okay to text someone while you are talking to someone else?
In this one-session study for youth, teens will reflect on how applying tech etiquette while using technologies like Facebook and texting might help them be more mindful about nurturing and strengthening their relationships; examining Colossians 3:12-14 will help further this concept for participants. Youth will examine their own habits regarding technology and will offer and vote on ground rules for using technology. This is an important conversation for today's youth (and adults!).
