In the first of the Harry Potter films we are transported into a world in which magic is a part of life, at least for the few who are gifted with its powers. Even though we are "Muggles," we are taken into the world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where we follow the fortunes and misfortunes of a boy who just might have been chosen to lead the fight against powerful forces of evil that threaten the world of Muggles and wizards alike. We see how Harry Potter and his new friends at the Academy are faced with decisions that most adults, let alone children, never have to make as they find themselves under attack in the war between good and evil.
Some Christians continue to attack the novels and films on the basis that the Scriptures tell us to have nothing to do with magic and witchcraft and that reading or viewing the films could lead young readers into accepting practices that are inherently evil. Most church leaders, however, believe that even children are aware that the stories are make-believe and that they very definitely teach positive values. We will see this as we discuss the actions and motives of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and their headmaster, Professor Dumbledore.
As with the other films discussed in the Thoughtful Christian, the group will watch a few scenes that are packed with insight and meaning. It would be best if everyone would see the entire film before the class meets, but this is not necessary for participants to profit from the study.
