How far would you go for the cause of justice? What if it involved someone you loved?
Based on a true story, Clint Eastwood's The Changeling depicts the stark reality of what "justice" and "law" often look like in a fallen world, and raises a host of issues ideal for conversation in a group setting. Through film clips and discussion, participants follow Angelina Jolie's Academy Award-nominated portrayal of a single mother (Christine Collins) seeking her missing son and the trauma she goes through in seeking the truth of his whereabouts.
This one-session study offers opportunity to reflect on biblical portrayals of justice and injustice, as well as the role of those who seek and advocate for it. Looking more closely at John Malkovich's portrayal of the Presbyterian minister (the Rev. Gustav Briegleb) who stood in solidarity with Jolie's struggling character, group members are asked to reflect on the social ills of corruption, gender inequality, and "saving face" as well as the blessings of advocacy and perseverance in faith.
