According to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, long before the time when Abraham was called forth on his own epic journey of spiritual discovery, there was a land where magic was possible, a land called Middle-earth. It was a time when Elves, Dwarves, Wizards, and other legendary creatures were abroad. This is a classic tale of the battle between Good and Evil, the plot concerning the attempt of a band of eight sturdy adventurers charged with setting forth upon a perilous adventure.
Like all great myths and stories, The Lord of the Rings trilogy appeals to the sense of adventure and wonder within us. We can find insights into our own nature and deepen our understanding of our own faith.
As with the other films discussed in the Thoughtful Christian, the group will watch a few scenes that are packed with insight and meaning. It would be best if everyone would see the entire film before the class meets, but this is not necessary for participants to profit from the study.
