Traditionally, Halloween is a time for ghosts and goblins and all things creepy! After all, most people like a good scare every once in a while. Unfortunately, for many of our youth Halloween also represents an excuse to dabble in activities that may seem out of character, and harmless "mischief" can escalate into vandalism. Even Halloween costumes are trending away from silly fun and toward a celebration of the violent, the grotesque, and the sexually suggestive. Images of death and the occult are popular, as well, yet how does that jibe with Christian beliefs about the afterlife? Additionally, Halloween is also big business, second only to Christmas in its overall economic impact. What exactly are we celebrating here, anyway?
In this one-session study for youth featuring a lively assortment of case studies, games, and other activities, participants will learn about the roots of Halloween and explore its relevance and meaning (or lack thereof) to contemporary Christianity.
