Since the Great Recession began in 2007, 8.4 million Americans have lost their jobs and 3 million homes have been foreclosed on. As of March, 2010, unemployment, down slightly from its high, was sitting at 9.9 percent.
Who are these people whose lives have been torn apart? Look down your pew and you will see them-the faces of a true economic crisis.
Of course, the church is often at its best in times of crisis. We respond energetically when natural disasters strike around the world. We are there with concern and casseroles when people die. When we see the crises of unemployment in our families and communities, the church has unique gifts to bring to the problem.
In this study we'll look at a number of ways in which we can provide the support the newly unemployed in our midst may require. Whether it's through emotional support (a caring ear), spiritual support (reassurances that their identity rests in Christ and not their paycheck), or practical support (opportunities for networking and a job listing bulletin board in a prominent place), this study will help members of your congregation be the body of Christ to fellow Christians in need.
