Lutheranism is one of the largest Protestant denominations today. The Lutheran denomination was founded by Martin Luther, a German monk and professor who has been called the "Father of the Reformation." In 1517, he famously protested against the Catholic Church's sale of indulgences with the posting of his Ninety-five Theses. In his sermons and writings, Luther stressed the doctrine of justification by faith alone and the authority of scripture alone.
The goal of this two-session study is to introduce both the history and some of the present-day characteristics of Lutheranism. By the end of the session, participants will have a basic knowledge of Martin Luther's life and work and of Lutheran history and theology in general. Additionally, the group will reflect on how Lutheranism relates to their own faith tradition.
